Purpose This study compared the pain and skin reactions of neonates according to the method of removing the adhesive eyepatch used for phototherapy.
Methods The subjects included 20 neonates admitted at C University Hospital. In group 1 (n=10), DuoDERM dressing was attached under the adhesive eyepatch, which was removed with water, while in group 2 (n=10), the eyepatch was attached on the skin and removed with oil. Heart rate, oxygen saturation, the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS), crying time were measured. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance.
Results No interaction was found between group and timing for heart rate and oxygen saturation. In group 1, the NIPS score was higher and the crying time was longer than in group 2. No difference was observed in the erythema score between the groups.
Conclusion Removing the adhesive eyepatch using oil can be used as a nursing intervention to reduce pain and improve comfort in neonates.
Purpose The purpose of this descriptive survey study was to characterize the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction among pediatric nurses and to elucidate the mediating effects of the nurse-parent partnership on that relationship.
Methods The subjects of the study were 174 nurses who had worked in a pediatric ward in a university hospital, general hospital, or children's hospital. Data were collected from June 20, 2016 to August 10, 2016 and analysed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and three-step mediated regression analysis in SPSS version 22.0 for Windows.
Results The nurse-parent partnership had significant effects on clinical decision-making and job satisfaction, with an explanatory power of 19% and 26%, respectively. The nurse-parent partnership had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction (Sobel test: Z=4.31, p<.001).
Conclusion The nurse-parent partnership had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction among pediatric nurses. Therefore, in order to improve the job satisfaction of pediatric nurses, it is necessary to develop effective educational programs and strategies to address their clinical decision-making and their experiences of the nurse-parent partnership.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop a model for handoff education for nursing students based on simulation using video and to identify educational effects of a simulated situation in pediatric care units.
Methods Data were collected from May 1 to 30, 2016. Participants were 84 senior nursing students in Seoul (video group: 43, simulation group: 41). Both groups were given a lecture and pre-briefing on handoff education. The simulation group had nursing practice on resolving health issues for respiratory distress using a high-fidelity baby simulator. The video group watched a video recording of a scenario based simulation, and used a summarized handoff situation to practice patient handoff to another student.
Results There was no significant difference between the two groups for handoff self-confidence, problem solving ability, handoff competence (self-assessment of students), or learning satisfaction. Self-confidence increased significantly in both groups. Handoff competency evaluated by the instructor was higher in the video group compared to the simulation group (t=2.33, p=.022).
Conclusion Nursing student education for handoff practice utilizing a video in the pediatric unit was more cost effective. Therefore, it could be a useful educational method for students in learning patient handoff practices and helpful for related research.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to construct a model to explain the parenting satisfaction associated with the role transition of older mothers with preschool children.
Methods The participants of this study were mothers of 3- to 6-year-old children who gave birth after 35 years of age, and were drawn from 16 child care centers and 8 kindergartens in 4 administrative districts of B city. Data were analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 22.0 and AMOS for Windows version 22.0.
Results Parental stress, mother-child interactions, parental beliefs regarding personality, and socioeconomic status (income, education, and occupation) had direct effects on parenting satisfaction. Social support also showed direct and indirect effects. Among the sub factors of child temperament, sociability had a significant effect. These variables explained 57.4% of the variation in parenting satisfaction.
Conclusion The results of this study will contribute to the development of effective programs to enhance the parenting satisfaction of older mothers, and will help older mothers through the role transition necessary for the growth of their children.
Purpose This study was conducted to characterize the influence of achievement motivation and the parent-child relationship on ego identity in Korean nursing students.
Methods The participants were 217 Korean nursing students in the first and fourth year of university. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires composed of items assessing ego identity, achievement motivation, the parent-child relationship, and demographic characteristics. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, the x2 test, and multinomial logistic regression analysis.
Results Ego identity was related to achievement motivation; moreover, the achievement motivation of students with moratorium and achieved identity status was significantly higher than that of students with low-profile moratorium and diffused identity statuses. Ego identity was not related to the mother-child relationship, but the father-child relationship of students in foreclosure was significantly higher than that of students with diffused identity status. The factors influencing achieved identity compared to diffused identity were achievement motivation, year in school, satisfaction with school, and having religious beliefs.
Conclusion These findings indicate that nursing students’ ego identity attainment was more influenced by achievement motivation than by the parent-child relationship. It emphasizes that highly motivated students can develop their own identities regardless of the parent-child relationship.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate measurement properties of self-report questionnaires measuring the social adjustment for youth after treatment of childhood cancer.
Methods Social adjustment measurement tools were identified through a two-stage systematic review. First, we searched for articles using self-report questionnaires to measure the social adjustment of youth after the treatment of childhood cancer. The appropriate tools were listed and categorized. Second, using methodological filters, we searched 5 electronic databases for articles examining the measurement properties of the tools when used with youth after the treatment of childhood cancer. The quality of these papers was then evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist.
Results Eight tools were frequently used to measure social adjustment. Eight studies investigated the measurement properties of 4 of these tools. The PedsQL 4.0 and MMQL-AF had moderate to strong evidence in some domains, but the rest of the domains had a lack of evidence. The SF-36 and KIDSCREEN-27 were validated for only a few areas.
Conclusion We found a lack of evidence regarding the measurement properties of these tools. More research is required on the measurement properties of tools for use in this population.
