PURPOSE To investigate the degree and sources of stress which fathers of infants in NICU experience. METHOD Eighty-five fathers of NICU infants at 5 university hospitals in Seoul volunteered to complete the Parental Stressor Scale for NICU (PSS: NICU) from September 1, to October 15, 2002. RESULTS Total perceived stress was 3.50+/-0.76. The highest score were in Parental Role Alteration (3.76+/-0.83) and Appearance and Behavior (3.65+/-1.04). The total perceived stress score (PSS), correlated significantly with method (t=3.50, p=.01), and route (F=5.30, p=.00) of feeding. Light & Sound correlated significantly with birth weight (F=3.39, p=.02), medical diagnosis(F=2.30, p=.03), plan of operation(t=2.50, p=.01), operation (t=3.80, p=.02), method (F=4.90, p=.003), and route (F=4.70, p=.00) of feeding.
Infant Appearance and Behavior correlated significantly with birth weight (F=5.12, p=.01), plan of operation (t=2.50, p=.01), method (F=3.50, p=.01), and route (F=7.80, p=.00) of feeding. Parental Role Alteration correlated significantly with care of incubator (t=-.68, p=.03), method of feeding (F=2.80, p=.04) and education level of father (F=3.00, p=.05). CONCLUSION Father with NICU infants were concerned mostly with parental role alteration and infant appearance. Nursing intervention should include fathers of NICU infants.
PURPOSE To explore the level of and relationship between parental knowledge and confidence in newborn care. METHOD The sample of this study was consisted of 113 newborn's parents. Data was collected by researcher from Oct. 28th to Dec. 18th, 2002. Data were analyzed SPSS WIN(10.0) Program. RESULTS Total score of parents knowledge: Father's mean was 13.59(SD=5.32) and Mother's mean was 17.55(SD=3.72). There was meaningful difference in knowledge about newborn care between father and mother. The mother's knowledge was significant higher than the father's(t=6.45, p=.000). Total score of parents of newborn confidence: Father's mean was 40.66(SD=7.34) and Mother's mean was 41.88(SD=7.23). There was no difference in confidence in newborn care between father and mother(t=1.26, p=.209). There was significant correlation between knowledge and confidence about newborn care of fathers(r=.331, p<.001) and mothers(r=.317, p<.01). CONCLUSION There is a need to educate fathers to enhance their knowledge about newborn care. More research is needed to study the relationship between parental knowledge and accuracy of behavior regarding newborn care.
PURPOSE To investigate the prevalence of smoking behavior among elementary students which may serve as basic data for developing a smoking prevention program. METHOD Questionnaires were given to 734 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders in five elementary schools in U county, North Chungcheong Province. Data were collected from 8 to 20 December, 2003; and analyzed using SPSS/PC for descriptive and chi-square statistics. RESULTS Of these students, 19.9% reported that they had smoked and 0.8% answered they are current smokers. They reported that the first smoking started during third grade (26.0%), at their homes (38.4%), and out of curiosity (74.0%). They reported severe coughing when they first smoked (56.2%). Smoking experiences were significantly related to grade, gender, and academic performance.
Similarly, environmental characteristics such as residential area, parental status, father's job, parental attention, home atmosphere, and smoking siblings or friends were significantly related to smoking behavior. Among non-smokers, 86.4% intended not to smoke and 1.4% would like to smoke in the future. CONCLUSION Certain school and environmental characteristics were associated with smoking experimentation. Therefore teachers and parents should use this information to develop and guide smoking prevention programs.
PURPOSE The measure the degree of computer game addiction; to examine the relationship between computer game addiction and contributing factors; and to discover the predictors of computer game addiction of elementary school children of Korea. METHOD Data were assembled from questionnaires distributed among 455 children from four elementary schools in Gyung-buk Province. RESULTS The level of computer game addiction of subjects was rather low, and correlated significantly with gender, academic performance, family economic status, playmates for leisure time, place of playing computer game, length of the habit of playing game, average playing time of game per day, frequency of PC-room(Internet Cafe for game) visits per week, game partners and reasons for playing game. Multiple regression analysis showed that 45% of the computer game addiction was significantly related to gender(21%), impulsiveness(10%), average playing time of game per day(9%), depression(2%) and other variables(3%) such as playmates for leisure time, academic performance and frequency of PC-room visits per week. CONCLUSION We suggest these results be used to develop a computer game addiction prevention program.
PURPOSE To investigate factors influencing sexual harassment and the frequency of incidents among university students. METHOD During 1-20 July 2004, 339 students from five universities in Busan, Korea, responded to a written questionnaire. The SPSS Program calculated descriptive statistics, chi square test, and logistic regression analysis of the data. RESULTS Of the total respondents, 69.3% (62.6% of the males and 77.2% of the females), reported that they were victims of sexual harassment. Conversely, 72.5% (males 84.3%; females 58.4%), indicated that they were sexual harassment offenders. Characteristics of the reported victims were significantly different in terms of class year, proportion of males to females in their academic department, and group norms regarding sexually harassing behavior. Characteristics of the admitted offenders were significantly different in term of proportion of males to females within their academic department, group norms, and awareness of sexual harassment.
Factors predicting sexual harassment included gender, proportion of males to females in an academic department, the group norms regarding sexually harassing behavior, and the offenders experiences. CONCLUSION This study suggested that occurrence of sexual harassment among university students were related to various factors. Prevention programs should be developed that focus on these factors.
PURPOSE To compare normal weight children with obese children in terms of family factors, eating habits, and sociocognitive factors. METHOD This study compared 217 obese children with 231 normal standard weight children of 4th-6th graders from 7 elementary schools in Kangwon province. The study also surveyed 817 their parents using questionnaires in which familial factors, eating habits, and sociocognitive factors such as dietary self-efficacy, locus of control and self-esteem were included. RESULTS Obese children had more obese family members, more family members with chronic metabolic disease, and lower breast-feeding rate than normal weight group. Dietary self-efficacy was positively correlated with eating habits and locus of control while no correlation was found with obesity index.. Self-esteem was negatively correlate with obesity index. Both the parents and the childrens eating habits showed significant positive correlation to the obesity index. CONCLUSION These results implied familial factors, eating habits, and sociocognitive factors influenced childhood obesity. Thus, further research targeting to positive attitude toward familial dietary practices combined with significant sociocognitive factors, may lead to prevention and effective management of childhood obesity.
PURPOSE To investigate the relationships among mother's perception of her own newborn, her caring-confidence level, and her child-rearing attitude; and to provide data for developing effective nursing education programs on maternal newborn care. METHOD Explorative survey questionnaires were completed by 159 married mothers of newborns from November 2003 to March 2004. Data were analyzed using SPSS/Win 10.0 by t-test and Pearson's Correlation coefficient. RESULTS The mean scores of the mother's perception of her own newborn, her caring-confidence level, and her child-rearing attitude were .26, 3.13, and 3.43 respectively. There was a positive correlation between mother's perception of her own newborn and her child-rearing attitude. There was a significant correlation between mothers caring-confidence level and her child-rearing attitude. Score of caring-confidence was significantly different depending on the availability of helper and history of delivery. CONCLUSION Availability of helper and history of delivery significantly affected mothers caring-confidence. This in turn, along with mothers perception of her own newborn, enhanced mothers child-rearing attitude. Thus, an effective education for mothers should include these factors.
PURPOSE To develop an Infant Developmental Assesment Scale appropriate for Korean infants that includes cultural context. METHOD The total sample included 990 infants aged birth to 24months. The developmental tests were conducted at hospital well baby clinic, daycare centers, public health centers and homes located in city, urban and rural areas. Item analysis was done to examine content validity of the scale. Test responses were analyzed by SPSS to examine the inter-rater reliability, and construct validity. RESULTS Based on the naturalistic observation and analysis of other developmental instruments, 260 Korean infant developmental items were created. The mean score of the developmental quotient of 966 infants was 101.63+/-10.89.
Correlation coefficient of inter-rater reliability was .99.
In addition, 84.6% of total items showed Kappa .70 and above. The development quotient was significantly different depending upon the residential area and father's occupation, therefore, construct validity using known group technique was supported. CONCLUSION The developed instrument can be used to assess the development of handicapped infants, as well as normal infant's general abilities and to study individual differences within the normal range for Korean.
PURPOSE To develop a tool to evaluate middle school sex education programs. METHOD An evaluation tool was developed in 4 stages: first, preliminary items were developed based on the sex education guidebook for teachers published by the Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development; second, a panel of specialists reduced the number of preliminary items by 3 validity tests on the contents; third, final items were selected from the results of pre-test. Finally, reliability and validity were tested by a sample of 601 middle school students of both genders attending all three grades. RESULTS The developed evaluation tool contained 31 items on the sexual knowledge and 22 items on the sexual attitude.
The results of reliability tests were as follows: Cronbachs alpha for sexual knowledge was .84; and for sexual attitude was .88. CONCLUSION This study suggested the developed evaluation tool for sex education programs for middle school students had a high degree of reliability and validity. Therefore, it can be utilized to effectively evaluate Korean middle school sex education programs.

PURPOSE This descriptive study was conducted to illuminate, from the nursing point of view, the infant care act, which was revised recently and to suggest a desirable direction of its enforcement decree and regulations. METHOD This study was carried out through literature review and a collection of child care experts' opinions. RESULTS The most remarkable changes in infant care act and the suggestions for a desirable direction of its enforcement decree and regulations are as follows: It can be said that the law on 'health', 'nutrition' and 'safety' for a child care center was improved to the level of act from the level of enforcement regulation. In the enforcement regulation on the distribution of nurses in child care centers, it is desirable that nurse's aids are excluded. It is recommended that every child care center should have a nurse or a health care manager and/or an emergency caretaker. In the curriculum for child care, the subjects on child health care should be an essential subject, not elective. CONCLUSION Child care act should be reformed under the discipline of first priority to child health. Every nurse and nursing professor should have interest and earnestness in child care and conduct related studies.
